Clarification on DVSA approval for trailer brake testing

Wednesday 3rd August 2016

Over the past 18 months we have received numerous enquiries asking whether our portable brake testers are approved by the DVSA for trailer testing.  Our answer to this has always been that no decelerometers are approved for trailer testing, despite some within our industry implying the opposite.

We are pleased that the GEA, who operate the MOT equipment approval service on behalf of the DVSA, have today issued a statement confirming that our advice is correct.  As we have always said, although no portable decelerometers are approved for trailer testing, there are methods available which can allow portable decelerometers to be used as a diagnostic tool and to assist in determining the brake efficiency of commercial trailers.  Please contact us for more information.
