Industry News: First MOT to remain at 3 years

Friday 19th January 2018

The government yesterday announced that plans to extend the MOT exemption period for new cars from 3 to 4 years has been scrapped, a decision which has been welcomed by the industry.  This follows a consultation during which the Department for Transport received 1,970 responses, the majority of which did not support the proposal to move the first MOT test from 3 to 4 years.

The consultation outcome noted that potentially unsafe vehicles could remain on the road for another year without examination, and the government has therefore decided to maintain the current position of a first MOT being required after 3 years.
